Product Description Smoking meat and fish properly can take days. So, rather than going out to the smoker to check the temperature time and time again, simply install a RediChek Remote Wireless Smoker Thermometer and rest at ease. This handy thermometer monitors smoker air temperature and food temperature from up to 100 feet away. And, if the temperature drops too low or jumps too high, the RediChek alarm goes off, so there are no spoiled batches-just certainty that every batch of smoked salmon is perfection. The RediChek can also be used with an oven or grill for peace of mind while baking, barbecuing, and broiling and for fewer trips to the kitchen. Best of all, the RediChek is wireless, so installation is a snap. Your purchase includes four AAA batteries for out-of-box use. --Brian Olson

Dual probes a winner

Comment:
Perfect for probing meats on the smoker and walking away to enjoy a ball game or take a nap while the thermometer monitors both the meat and smoker chamber temps. Worked as described, gives me ample range between the transmitter and receiver and is very accurate when tested against a digital Thermapen.
This thermometer is helpful during long "lo and slo" smokes. I can sleep knowing the thermometer will alarm if I need to attend to the meat or smoker.
My only complaints are minor, but could stand improvement none the less. The off/on switch on the transmitter is cumbersome since the back cover has to be removed to slide the switch. Also, my probes short out and quit working when the smoker temp goes very high. Somewhere around 400* the probes short out. This is no biggie for my application since I am smoking at 225*, but for a high temp cooker, this will become an issue.
Overall, I am satisfied and enjoy the ET-73. I highly suggest this product. It is one of the choices of top professional BBQ competition teams.

breaks quickly

Comment:
I have bought two of these now. Both broke within the first year. One or the other of the probes quit working both times. Otherwise it is a very good idea, just wish it lasted more than a year. This year I kept it in a plastic bag, with no batteries in it between uses. The year before I did keep it in the smoker, and it did get wet, but it has a rubber grommet I thought to prevent moisture problems. I will not buy another.

Comment:
I found out the Thermometer that came with the smoker was 30 degrees off .. I had been really slow cooking my meats ... using the Maverick I was able to get the correct temperature in the box and the alarm let me know when it was cooling down .. With the meat thermometer the roast came out tender and a perfect medium rare !
Much more tasty then if it had come out of the oven - now I am ready to get to the 'wood store' so I can practice up for a Brisket !!

I've had two, both broke before using 5 times

Comment:
I bought one of these in 2008. They are a little bit of a pain to set, and it's stupid where they have the on/off switch; but a thermometer for the Weber Smoker is a necessity (and wasn't provided by Weber until recently) and the long-distance monitoring capability is a convenience; and it worked initially.
But maybe the third or fourth time I tried to use my first unit, one of the probes started reporting crazy numbers, like that the ambient temperature in my house was 130 degrees.
This item gets two stars (instead of one) partly because it initially worked to my satisfaction, but also because I mailed the broken unit to Maverick and they mailed me back a replacement. But that unit, again on, I think, my fourth use registered wildly inaccurate temperatures. I've done nothing I can think of that should have harmed it, and I've tried everything I could think of to reset it, to get it working right again.
I suppose I'll send it in to Maverick and see if they send me a new one, but it's certainly past the warranty of when I bought the first one. I'm not buying another unit like it. I've already purchased a River Country dial thermometer that you insert into a hole you drill in the Smoker's lid. For the meat itself, I'm staying with my CDN Q2-450 "QuickTip" Digital Thermometer, which I found more accurate than the Maverick. It isn't as convenient to open the lid and stick in the probe as it is to sit in my living room and look at a remote display, but the CDN hasn't broken yet, let alone twice.

Comment:
A coin is needed to remove switch cover, making on/off switch a pain to access. The temp.wires could be a little longer, overall the units seem to work well.
